Green Building – Lot Design, Preparation, and Development
Why Build a Green Home in North Carolina?
Why should you consider a
green home
in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area of North Carolina? Here are just a few reasons why homeowners are "going green."
- Lower energy and water consumption (and cost!)
- Reduced reliance on natural resources
- Less carbon footprint (greenhouse gas output)
- Reduced warranty claims
- Healthier indoor air
- Improved durability and lower maintenance
- Better resale value
Green Home Certification Process
A certified green home incorporates environmental considerations into every phase and aspect of the home building process.
To earn a certification, green homes are independently verified by a third party inspector across numerous categories,
to ensure all standards are met for increased efficiency, better health, and reduced negative environmental impact.
Raleigh custom home builder Stanton Homes will work with you to consider hundreds of green options
for a beautiful home that meets the seven guiding principles of green building.
Lot Design, Preparation and Development
Resource-efficient site design and development practices help reduce environmental impacts.
Green design principles include things like saving trees, constructing onsite storm
water retention/infiltration features, and orienting the home for maximum passive solar heating and cooling.
There are three basic levels of certification
that can be attained by meeting a minimum number of individual attributes, each of which is assigned a point value.
As an example, Bronze certification typically centers on things like:
- Certified Green Training
- Protected Home Sites
- Natural Vegetation
- Hydrozoning
- Erosion Control
- Limited Impact on Land
- Shared Driveways or Parking Areas
- Optimization of Solar Orientation
