Tips to Help you Determine a Reasonable Budget
1. Get prequalified for a loan:
Ask us for recommended lenders, to help get you started.
Get an idea of your prequalified loan amount,
before you get too far into the building process.
2. Start off conservatively: Be realistic in your assessment of how much you can spend, and
remember it’s easier to expand a home than shrink one.
3. Create a wish list: What fun features stand out to you? Keep in mind that Stanton Homes’
includes "standard features" that are upgrades or simply unavailable for other builders, so you won’t
need to add tons of extra costs.
4. Prioritize Features: Understand that some features you find in magazines may not
completely suit your family's needs – and budget. The most expensive areas in a home are usually
the bathrooms and the kitchen, but we’ll show you how to get the most for your money in these important rooms.
Other important things to keep in mind
1. The cost per square foot is often higher for a smaller home than for a larger home.
2. The cost per square foot is often higher for a one story home than for a two story home with the same square footage.
(A two-story home will have a smaller roof and foundation.)
3. Know what aspects of your home you can realistically complete on your own, after construction by your builder is complete.
For example, ask your builder if it is more cost-effective to have an unfinished third floor or bonus room.
You may want to plan on saving money on smaller aspects, such as landscaping and decks, with some “do it yourself” weekends.
