What’s Better, an Island or a Peninsula?
Custom Home Kitchen Trends - How to Choose Your Kitchen Layout
Trying to decide between an island or a peninsula for your new kitchen?
One of the biggest factors in chooosing between an island or peninsula is the size of your kitchen.
In larger kitchens, islands tend to work better. In smaller kitchens, peninsulas tend to work better.
Kitchen Layout - Triangle of Work
Kitchen design is usually based on the "work triangle" - the number of steps between the sink, cooktop,
and refrigerator.
Take a look at the example below of a kitchen modified by Stanton Homes from an island to a peninsula.
Island Kitchen - Original Floor Plan
Take a look at this "work triangle."
Notice how this island kitchen layout may not allow for easy movement between the sink, cooktop, and refrigerator -
especially when more than one person tries to use the kitchen at the same time.
There is plenty of space in this kitchen, however, which can be utilized with the right layout adjustments.
Peninsula Kitchen - Modified Floor Plan
Now take a look at new "work triangle" in the same kitchen, with a few custom modifications.
This modified layout allows easy movement between the sink, cooktop, and refrigerator - with spacious,
distinct work areas and maximized counter and cabinet space.
At Stanton Homes, we can redesign your kitchen floor plan to put everything just where you need it – BEFORE you build.

When is an peninsula better?
A peninsula will usually give you more cabinets and greater square footage of counter
top than when you cut up your kitchen space just to include a smaller island.
It is best to include a peninsula when your kitchen is smaller, and cabinet and counter space are at a premium.
When is an island better?
As a general rule, if there is one cabinet wall of 12' or greater (with a 45 degree angle into another cabinet wall),
the functionality of the kitchen is improved with an island.
The island allows you twice the access to the long wall that is 12' or greater. Otherwise, you have one
traffic lane of access to all wall cabinets.
