NC Custom Home Design - Adding a Custom Mudroom
Idea. Sketch. Design. Build.
The Dining Room is out. The ultimate mudroom/everything room is in. Here’s how a Home Hub happens:
The Carwiles loved the romance of a traditionally styled home and came to Stanton Homes with a design in mind of a classic white house with a front porch and black shutters.
They also had some things in mind that would lead to savvy improvements in the livability of the original floorplan –
like swapping out the formal dining room on the floor plan they liked for a room they could use as a Home Hub –
a kid and pet friendly mudroom.
Their entertaining style was casual elegance rather than formal,
so they were willing to eliminate a formal dining room and put that space to better use.
The small laundry room behind the kitchen was moved into the dining room space.
The laundry room space became an ample walk-in pantry with exterior window (pictured to the left).
The formal dining room on the original floor plan was redesigned to become a mudroom/everything room
to fit a lifestyle with kids and pets who needed a "Home Hub."
The perimeter of the room was wrapped in cabinets and built-in countertops.
Tall cabinets were designed to house large cleaning tools and supplies.
Upper cabinets were designed for small cleaning supplies, wrapping paper, light bulbs, pet supplies and a first aid kit.
A sink base cabinet with faucet and sprayer was added for cleaning out pet dishes, re-filling water dishes and pre-treating clothes.
Areas below the countertops were left open as a feeding space for pets.
Above the sink an open area was fitted with a rod for hanging hand-laundered delicate garments.
The security system panel and large bulletin board (for children's artwork) are conveniently located to the left at the entrance to the room.
The countertop back splash areas were fitted with extra outlets at desk height - perfect for a phone and camera charging station.
The Carwiles plan to add adhesive-backed 12 x 12 cork tiles to the back splash area for calendars,
soccer and dance schedules and appointments.
The cork tiles will coordinate with the cork plank flooring.
This forward-thinking design of "green" cork flooring has been loved for years - its exotic earthy looks,
resilience (moisture friendly) and hypo-allergenic qualities make it an ideal choice for a 21st century home hub.
The remaining open areas are designed to house large baskets of outside plastic toys and seasonal gear such as scarves, mittens and hats.
The color scheme and casual style of the Carwile home hub will lend itself well to future needs –
even finger painting has a place in this 100% washable, kid-friendly design.
